Avram Grant: Ever the optimist
By: Rob | April 17th, 2008
Despite the fact that rumours are flying around that Chelsea manager Avram Grant is not going to be in his job much longer, yesterday he announced that he had been talking with Chelsea’s billionaire ownder Roman Abromovich about who he wants to buy. Today, he has supposedly revealed his transfer targets. Ricky Kaka’ and Leo Messi.
That’s right. Apparently (although the original source is the Daily Star…) the two players that Grant would like to bring to Chelsea, are two of the three best footballers in the world.
Grant has been promising for ages that he would bring in attacking players that are better to watch – and with the squad needing a going over with Ben-Haim, Shevchenko, Drogba, possibly Lampard and more heading out of Stamford Bridge he has been given 100m to sign the players that he wants. And despite the fact that Kaka’ has just signed a contract to keep him at Milan forever and mentioned that he didn’t want to leave Milan after talking to Andriy Shevchenko – Grant has no worries about whether Kaka’ and Messi will sign.
“Will it take a flair player like Kaka’ or Messi? I will not reject that one of those names will be here.
Will they come? I think so, yes. This is a big club
Only one team can win the Champions League. Only one team can be champions of England.
You think players will only come to these two teams? No”
Go back to the drawing board Avram. As lovely as it would be to see such good players playing in the same team (a midfield of Kaka’ Messi and Joe Cole would surely be any fans wet dream) it strikes me as somewhat unlikely.

I don’t think Grant will be out of a job anytime soon. The Russian has a yes man that isn’t a horrible manager. If he can get rid of the Mourinho camp this summer and bring in his own, he’ll be fine.

I do think that Avram will stay in his job at least another season. Especially if he beats your lot CSD in the CL semi. He’s being a little optimistic about his targets though.
