Champions League Day One Roundup!

By: Rob | September 16th, 2008

Big upset for Totti\'s RomaBig story of Day One is undoubtedly from Rome. Little known Romanian side Cluj pulled off a 2-1 win against Serie A runners up Roma in a big shock result. Meanwhile in the same group, Chelsea strolled to a 4-0 win against Bordeaux. More after the jump.

No such problems for fellow Italian side Inter Milan, who picked up a 2-0 win against Panathinaikos. Adriano and Mancini got the goals for the Serie A champions. The other game in that group saw newcomers Anorthosis pick up an impressive 0-0 draw against fancied (by me at least) Werder Bremen.

Shakhtar Donetsk beat Basel 2-1 in Group C, Basel’s goal coming late on after a game of dominated by Donetsk. Barcelona meanwhile strolled to a 3-1 win in a tricky game against Sporting Lisbon. Xavi, Eto’o (from the pen spot) and Marquez scored for the Catalonia club, while Tonel scored for Lisbon.

Athletico Madrid added to the promise shown by Spanish clubs already this season as the smashed PSV 3-0. The Dutch side had thier chances, but Maniche and Aguero, who got two, made sure that the Spanish side sit top of Group D. Liverpool had to come from a goal down to beat Marseille. The french scored early, but were pegged back right away by a superb Steven Gerrard effort, and he got a second via the penalty spot. It’s going to be a very hard group to get out of, that one.

More reaction to follow here at the Champions League offside.

    Sorry for writing in English.

But well, what can I say about Cluj? Perhaps one of many reason that why football is a beautiful game.

I’m happy many of the Argentine players in the team. That goal from Culio simply marvelous! beautiful! sensational!

Now everyone in the world will know jusu a bit more about them. But most importantly, other will take notice of this and take them seriously. That is for sure.

Anyway, enough from me. What about your opinion/comment about their performance? How far do you think they can go?
