Fox will not “Bulge the Old Onion Bag”
By: Sam | April 21st, 2009Fox Soccer Channel has saved quality footballing in the US, as they will take coverage of the UEFA Champions League 2010 away from ESPN. Read The Gaffer …

In particular, Fox in its Murdockian wisdom for next year’s play has elected to use the international feeds — where announcers have a clue about the nuances of the Beautiful Game and do not ramble on about the obvious (in a conspiracy to keep Americans enjoying the Hostess Twinkies (TM) that are Baseball, Basketball & “Football”).
I say this in the exhaust of a penetrating & perceptive item about our disaffection with ESPN announcer Tommy Smyth …

Insightful …
“He’s the main reason why most Americans are illiterate about soccer,” [claims a Boston-based Lyon fan, Inara.]
While I agree the Mr Smyth is bad in his coverage (with culturally devastating effects; although ESPN may view this as good), and have at times poored gasoline on that particular inferno, it saddens me to read that he’s been getting death threats. It also saddened me that TS was audibly affected by the story on the day: you could hear how low-key was his delivery (he was basically hiding) in the Chelsea v Liverpool coverage, stateside. Death threats: not on. Just, simply, NOT.
But let’s enjoy the moment for its manifest pleasures. And Mr Smyth will ostensibly be keeping his job hosting the St Patrick’s Day Parade — where his talents are ideally fit. It’s a win-win!

I agree, Sam. While Smyth’s exaggerated brogue and penchant for pulling foolish phrases out of his ass can be annoying, sending the man death threats is absolutely absurd and shows what pitiful people reside in this world. Telling the man his mother should have had an abortion? That’s evil, and reading it made me very sad.
