Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics
By: Rob | February 25th, 2008Over at the Champions League website, they have an intriguing, if ultimately pointless collection of stats on this years champions league so far. All the obvious things, of course, top scorer and assist maker and so on, but there is also a load more stuff, which i found, well at least mildly diverting for a bit.
Top Goalscorer so far: is Leo Messi, with 6 goals. Steven Gerrard and (pretty not fat) Ronaldo are doing well, with 5 each from midfield. Ibrahimovic is showing his form in Europe as well as Serie A as he also has 5 goals.
Most Assits: Alex, of Fenerbahce has 5. Pirlo is also in the running here, with 4. Harry Kewell to my surprise has 3, and so do Ruud Van Nistolrooy and Robhino, proving the old 3 up front is working alright for Real.
Most Shots on Target: Now here’s a good stat. Juninho has had a mind boggling 18 shots on target. Keepers are doing pretty well against Lyon it seems.
Most Shots off Target: Kanoute is showing why he’s the African player of the year, with a brilliant 14 shots off target. It will come to no-one’s surprise that Steven Gerrard is second here with 12, though the fact that he’s scoring means he’s scoring around one in four of his overall shots. Ronaldo also has 12 off target, suggesting that the form players are just shooting all the time.
Ruled Offside: I think this should be the Pippo Inzaghi award for being awarded offside as he is the the player who has been caught offside more than any other in Serie A history. But this year RvN leads the way with 14 flags. Adebayor is just one behind him.
Red Cards: Christian Chivu and Jermain Pennant are among the players on one red card. Along with Matrix.
Yellow Cards Roma Man Marco Cassetti is among the players on 4 yellows. Matrix obviously sits on just your two.
Fouls Commited: Cassetti is nowhere on the Fouls commited list, led by Aurelio with an impressive 23 fouls. I can’t even find him on the yellow cards list, so thats impressive.
Fouls Suffered: Not really shocked to learn its Quaresma are you? He’s been kicked just your 30 times in the tournament so far. Maybe stop pissing off the enemy with those flicks son.
The site goes into even more depth though - and you can look club by club. For example, of the teams left, Chelski have had the most shots wide, with 55. Barca, with 57 have got the most to no-one’s great surprise.

And there you have it. If you want to see how many minutes Roma have spent on the ball, geek out to your hearts content here. http://www.uefa.com/competitions/ucl/statistics/index.html
