Mancini’s Inter Legacy Clouded by Calciopoli

By: Sam | June 2nd, 2008

Is there no justice? The manager of Inter, the first in the club’s history to win 3 — THREE! — Scudetti on the trot is shit-canned.

Roberto Mancini in his Lazio daysButofcourse, I am personally thrilled that Jose Mourinho and Inter — two quality entities — have found each other. Nevertheless, what does it tell you about the modern game of football when victory — at least in one important dimension — is succeeded so often by the manager’s dismissal? (I am thinking of Avram Grant, too, who was a goalpost — or two or three — away from hoisting the European Cup.)

The manager gets no credit.

Even the coach, Helenio Herrara from Inter’s Golden Age of the 1960’s, never returned Mancini’s achievement. The middle year of 2006 will always have an asterisk because Juve, AC Milan, Reggina, Lazio & Fiorentina were relegated to Serie B. However, albeit against a reduced group, Inter still had to win it.

I believe it is difficult to manage in top football, win big things and still have relationships. Actually, Manicini managed well in Serie A. Of his player additions, many worked out brilliantly: Figo, Ibrahimovic, Maxwell, Maicon. But in the Champion’s League, his tactical ineptitude produced an exposure to bad luck and referees’ decisions — against Liverpool this year and against Villareal and Valencia a few successive years ago.

His reason for dismissal is really that half the players won’t speak to him, and this rather puts his departure into perspective.

I remember Roberto Mancini’s performances on the field for Sampdoria, saw him play in a friendly in New York (New Jersey) one year. His presence usually made a big impact on the game, so rare was his sense of space and unpredictability. It’s a pity his relationship with Inter should end under a cloud, but he should be encouraged to stay in the game.

Inter’s president, Massimo Moratti, speaks gracefully about the parting …

“Humanly I was very sorry to have to explain to him the decision. I know how important Mancini is for Inter and I haven’t forgotten what he has done with us, especially in these last two years. He has done well and I told him, and I also know that we won a wonderful Scudetto.”

Mourinho has signed a three-year contract to manage Inter’s first team and will be assisted by his collaborators, Rui Farias, Silvinho, Andrei Villas Boas and by Inter’s Giuseppe Baresi as Assistant Coach.

These teams are families. There is a graceful welcome message on the Inter website:

Thanking Roberto Mancini and his staff for the successes obtained in four seasons in charge of the first team, all of F.C. Internazionale welcomes Josè Mourinho and his collaborators and wishes them the best of luck in their new jobs.

What intrests me is that Morratti talks about “a” Scudetto. Which suggests he only sees the last one as legit, as he was playing against a reduced field, and the first is handed in the courts.

The fact that he lost the dressing room, along with his outburst after the Liverpool game has meant the writing was on the wall really.

Good to see you posting again Sam!

All those clubs were not relegated.
Juve was the only club sent to Serie B. The rest were simply docked points in the new season.

The only ones that were “clouded by Calciopoly” were Juve. They were the cheaters after all!

Not so, Milan, Fiorentina, Reggina, and Lazio were docked points in the 2006/2007 season for calciopoly-related infractions.

Still, Inter only lost 1 game that season in league play and we finished with 95 points – well ahead of Roma (75 pts). I think we won last year and this year fair and square. The only thing that helped us from Juve being sent down was that we got Ibra and Vieiri – neither wanted to play in B so they came to Inter.

And did I miss the sarcasm or did someone on this board besides me actually write something nice about Inter?

    =0)

I guess the question is whether Inter would have won the league if Juve hadn’t gone down a league, lost Ibrakadabra, Milan hadn’t been docked points etc etc. This year, I think they won it fair and square though, despite the wobble near the end.

And I say Yes! Even if Juve was up and they got 6 points off of us, we are still 14 points clear. Even if all the teams got all their points back, we are still hugely ahead. According to Ibra, he and Inter were already in talks before Juve went down. I dont know if him leaving is 100% based on relegation.

We won it 2006/2007 and 2007/2008. Hopefully 2008/2009 will be a real number 3 (although, I might take CL over another scudetto, if I have to choose that is).

It isn’t as simple as that I fear. I’m not trying to take the Scudetto away from Inter – it is Inter’s! – but you know that there are alot of other factors than just the point deduction.

Maybe Ibra would have gone anyway, who knows? But Cana, Zambro et al would still be at Juventus and then Juve would have been stronger and gained more points elsewhere. Its impossible to tell what would have happened.
