Predictions for “the” match of the tournament
By: Adam | May 21st, 2008
Here we are. Few hours away from the zero hour of grand finale. We at CL blog present the predictions for the most awaited match of the tournament.
Predictions:
Chelsea 2 - 1 Manchester United
Everyone is going gung-ho about how good Manchester United is. How Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez will rip Chelsea apart. How Ferguson will outsmart Avram Grant. How Lampard, Ballack and Drogba will fall down in front of Rio and Co. But we feel that its going to be Chelsea. Both the clubs have special incentives to win this one. United would pay the most fitting tribute to “busby babes”. On the other hand, Chelsea will put themselves on global football radar. United have just won the league. Chelsea will be hungrier than them to win the silverware. And if they fail to win it will be their 1st trohpyless season in the last 4 years. And this is their first European Cup final. So What do you think?

The Champions League predictor that we ran on the main page and the podcast ended up with the most common scoreline 2-1 to United. About 75% of our entrants apparently think United will take it, with Ronaldo (not surprisingly) the most often picked to score first. Drogba is second, followed by Rooney. My prediction is the same as yours, 2-1 to Chelsea.

1-0 United, Tevez scores in the 73rd minute.

Is there any chance both of them could loose?

Wow, imagine that: 15 minutes in and this game is about who can kick the ball longer down the field…2-1 for anyone is seeming like something of a stretch at the moment.
Of course, as I write that, Cronaldo nearly creates a goal.

At least this game is starting to shape up to be something worthy of the term final. In the 37th minute now and the teams are finally starting to play like they want to win this thing (and yeah, I know what the score is).

Lordy, what scintillating football….NOT. Hell of a strike off the woodwork from Drogba, though. Thought it was in for a second.

ET just started. Great game.
ManU was better in the first half but Chelsea clearly dominated the second. In my book they deserved to win. I hope they do.

The last 25 minutes of the first half and the last 10 minutes of ET were the only interesting parts. The rest, snoozefest, as Kevin said. I’m glad Chelsea lost, though. Makes the bitter, evil part of me feel better.

Chelsea was clearly the better team, felt bad for them. Shots off the post, even the penalty Terry missed was because of a foot slip (and it hit the post!)
I liked the game, it was a good fight overall, lots of closing down the areas, which forced creativity. Chelsea created more chances.

Chelsea deserved to win. Drogba’s shot off the post was a great strike. Lampard played a good match. I still don’t want him wearing blaugrana, but credit where credit is due.
Drogba was an idiot for picking up the red, btw.

I thought Chelsea deserved to win as well. Really didn’t like seeing that happen to JT and I’m not a big fan of the fella. I think Man United were better over the season, but over the 120 minutes it was all Chelsea for me, even if they took awhile to get going. They also only managed 3 shots on target out of 24 which is awful.
I think Chelsea will be back all guns blazing next time round, and JT can have a Stuart Pearce moment when the time comes I’m sure.

How on earth can you say that Chelsea deserved to win when Man United so easily could have gone into a 3-0 lead? Then people would have said how one sided the game was.
Instead Chelsea got the flukiest of goals (2 deflections and VDS slipped) and they got back in it. From this point on they were unlucky not to win, but the fact is Tevez should never have allowed them the opportunity (however great a game he otherwise had).
Dead 50:50 game, penalties are a coin flip, United’s experience shown through.

I think Man United were the better side in the first half, Chelsea seemed a bit overwhelemed. And you are right that Lampard’s goal had a bit of luck, but the finish still had to beat two men, and he still had to get to it. And by the same token, Drogba was unlucky when he hit the post. The point stands that Chelsea created more chances than United did - even my incredibly biased Man United mate who I watched it with conceeded that Chelsea should have won.
Congratualtions to United, they have been magnificent this year, and deserved it over the course of the season.
