Predictions: Its all about the numbers
By: Adam | April 7th, 2008We are on the doorsteps for the semis but we don’t know who all will be knocking the door. So we have cleared the confusions by predicting the guests in advance so that there are no surprises (ofcourse its CL and surprises are bound to be there). All the bloggers of the CL blog have contributed to this joint venture post.
CHELSEA vs FENERBAHCE:
Adam :- 2-0 (3-2)
Rob :- 1-0 (2-2)
Sam :- 2-2 (3-4)
LIVERPOOL vs ARSENAL:
Adam :- 1-1 (2-2)
Rob :- 1-2 (2-3)
Sam :- 1-1 (2-2)
MAN UTD. vs AS ROMA:
Adam :- 0-1 (2-1)
Rob :- 1-1 (3-1)
Sam :- 3-2 (5-2)
BARCELONA vs SCHALKE:
Adam :- 0-0 (1-0)
Rob :- 2-0 (3-0)
Sam :- 4-2 (5-2)
* Scores in brackets () indicate aggregate score
There are lots of interesting predictions above. Sam (surprisingly) thinks Fenerbahce will be moving to Semis. Whereas I and Rob think Chelsea will cruise to semis with clean sheet. Though Rob thinks Chelsea’s away goal will be the decider of the tie. Rob thinks Wenger’s fledglings will be making all the noise at Anfield with 1-2 victory over Liverpool. But both I and Sam are in sync that it will be one more 1-1 draw and Liverpool will enter last 4 on their penalties luck. As far as Man Utd. are concerned everyone is in unison that Fergie’s boys will make it to the semis. Sam also predicts that Ronaldo will be hitting the back of the net thrice. Similarly for Barcelona, everyone thinks that they will be the sole representative of Spain in semis. Sam thinks it will be “goals galore” match of quarters.

I agree with most predictions, except I think that Liverpool can beat out Arsenal, which is what I’m hoping for…

Sneaking suspicion when thinking about “standard deviation” — it’s the Liverpool | Arsenal game which could be the most surprising of all.

I’m desperately hoping Fenerbahce advance, and I think it’s skewing my judgement. I’m predicting a 2-2 tie (4-3 agg. in the turks favor).
The fact that Liverpool held Arsenal twice at Emirates makes me think they have the advantage at Anfield. 1-0 Liverpool (2-1 agg. Merseysiders).
Man U – Roma 2-0 (3-1) – Because the Red Devils are (for better or worse) that good.
Barca – Schalke 2-1 (3-1) – Schalke just blew so many opportunities in the first tie, I don’t think they’ll be given as many chances this time around.

John – The reason my Liverpool/Arsenal prediction is skewed in Arsenal’s favour is because I would much rather see them advance. Its hope as much as anything. And I think Liverpool will try for a 0-0.

fenerbahce is good, good enough to upset chelsea when avram grant makes horrid substitutions. but chelsea hasn’t lost at home in two and a half years, and while it must come to an end sometime, I doubt it’ll be at the hands of fenerbahce.

Chelsea v Fenerbahce: 2-0 (3-2)
Liverpool v Arsenal: 1-2 (2-3)
Manchester United v Roma: 2-2 (4-2)
Barcelona v Schalke 04: 1-1 (2-1)I think that Chelsea are going to come out, guns blazing against the Turks, and put the hammer down all quick like. I can see Fenerbahce holding their own at home, but not at a crazed Stamford Bridge.
Liverpool is going to, as they did over the weekend, just pack it back, try for the clean sheet and hope Fenerbahce advances from the other side of the draw. Ain’t gonna happen. Arsenal is going to stop dithering with the ball, which plays into Liverpool’s hands, and play football.
Totti is the question mark here. Roma is feeling snakebit. They really should have had at least one goal from that home leg. Having to make up two at Old Trafford is an impossible task. Man U essentially don’t have to play. No way they lose 0-2 at home. Pencil them in.
Camp Nou has been a creepy place for our lads lately, but Schalke can’t score goals in an empty stadium. Given their fondness for coming up the middle, coupled with the presence of Yaya, it just ain’t gonna happen for them. And they will have to come out and play, which falls right into the hands of Eto’o, Krkic and co. Just don’t hit the post, boys…
Chelsea advances over Liverpool, Barca (what else am I going to say?) advances over Man U, we win the final and the Camp Nou bench is once again safe for perms and ugly sportcoats.

i had a pretty good feeling about man u in rome last week and i have a reverse feeling about the game this week. ferdinand and vidic missing is gonna be huge. there will be times when the semis seem doubtful in this game, i think we’ll pull through. but just barely. lots of nervous stuff in the beginning for sure. i think if roma starts guily, cicinho, the vuc, and perrotta with no room for mancini some shit could get dicey.
also, barca isnt winning shit this year.

First and foremost I am a FB fan.
We might pull a narrow one, but still we are the underdogs. I am thinking 2-1 is highly likely. My guess spectaculaire: FB on penalties! I’d probably have a heart attack, but I digress.Liverpool and ManU should go through. I wouldn’t count Schalke out yet. I am not saying they will go through, but everybody is ready to stick a fork in them.

I think Schalke are not pretty but they are capable. The first half of the 1st leg they were asleep. Fabien Ernst was hiding from the ball. But they are able to beat Barca if they want. Bordan came so close at the end.
I love your Fenerbahce … want to see more of them. Clever side.
