Spanish Press unforgiving after Real defeat
By: Rob | March 11th, 2009
Its always been suspected in Catalonia that the Spanish press favours Real Madrid, if that is the case, they certainly didn’t show it after Liverpool’s 4-0 demolition of the Spanish Champions at Anfield last night.
Real, who have gone the last 11 games unbeaten in La Liga (including 10 wins and a draw against inter-city rivals Atlético) were told they had hit “rock bottom” by El Pais. The Spanish Champions have gone out at the Round of 16 in each of the last five years of the competition.
Liverpool didn’t hold back, and after a safe 1-0 win at the Bernabéu, they preceeded to tear a very average Madrid side to pieces. They did have a bit of luck, Real fans will look to the Torres opener which could easily have been disallowed, and the penalty that probably shouldn’t have been. But that can’t help but hide a limp display, as Iker Casillias could only try his best to keep the scoreline respectable.
‘Torres knocked Madrid to the ground and Gerrard buried them’ ran the most telling headline, as the plaudits unsurprisingly came in for the Spanish striker, a former Atlético man himself.
To be fair to Rafa Benitez, he knows how Europe works. Well the side has begun to flounder in the Premier League, Benitez knows how to play a game over two legs. And Liverpool will have to be considered serious contenders from hereon in.

The headline on today’s issue of SPORT read “EL CEMENTARIO BLANCO, 4-0″. Heh.
