Steaua to follow Porto out the CL door?

By: Rob | June 11th, 2008

Steaua badgeThis news is a few days old, but forgive me, there has been a small tournament going on that has my attention. Anyway, last week I reported that due to the Golden Whistle scandal, FC Porto would be banned from the Champions League next season. It seems UEFA have decided that Steaua Bucharest’s entry into Europe Premier Club Competetion (TM) is under doubt as well, after another scandal over in Romania.

After the least successful attempt at bribery ever - the Steaua chairman allegedly threw 1.7m Euros at a relegated side to encourege them to beat Steaua’s title rivals, which they failed to do - they have already been docked seven points, which leaves them in position for the third qualifying round of the CL. Everyone involved has denied any wrongdoing.

Maybe AC Milan has a chance still to get into the CL.

At this rate, they may as well dispense with the group stage and just go directly to the KO rounds.
