Tuesday Recap - holy smokes…..
By: Nathan | April 3rd, 2007What a day Liverpool drops 3 in the land of tulips, while Van Buyten scores a double for Bayern at the San Siro…I am still catching my breath. First Liverpool, their form is fast approaching its best, as they discover new options in place of stagnate mainstays. A strange but true occurrence is the emergence of Gerfard…no he didn’t go anywhere but interestingly now that his 2 positional foils have been out (Lampard vs. Andorra, Garcia for a while with the Reds) he has been able to take over the games from within. Given the ability to roam freely in the middle has reinvigorated his form indeed. I understand a managers desire to use their most talented players out of position as it is a better option than most alternatives, but what you give up by playing them out of position can’t possibley justify the decision right?!?!? Gerrard should be first on the team sheet in his preferred position, he will more than make-up for the deficiencies of another player not at their postional best. Also Mascherano providing cover for the impeccable Sissoko was a pleasant surprise, and really all that was left to question was the strikers….and now they are firing too. Bellamy and more recently Crouch has shown the touch. At this rate they are looking a tough beat to the Finals (early I know).
As for the head scratcher of the day Milan….good god what happened? Milan’s complete domination was undone by 2 half-chances from a center back…that wasn’t even Lucio!!!! The truth being in the scoreboard, we’ll find out the character of Milan in Munich. Though now they must not only overcome their blunder in the San Siro, but an emboldened Bayern who will welcome back Kahn in goal and Van Bommel to marshall the midfield. Suffice to say the looks Milan had today will not be readily available in 8 days. One bit of bad news for Bayern - stand in captain Sagnol looks to be done for the season. The game should be a cracker as Milan need a straight out win to advance. One flashback point, Maldini and Nesta looked very good paired together and should be given the chance for reprieve next week. A 4 star return leg for sure!

Those really were great matches. Milan played 70 minutes of really solid football - then let their guard down against a side you do not count out and now they’re the one coming from behind. As for Liverpool, it really is embarrassing to Arsenal that they lost to PSV. PSV had no plan for how to answer a Reds goal - their purely defensive effort was shot when Gerrard put the first goal in, and they are beyond done in this round. I’d put the chances of them going to Anfield, winning by three goals and moving on about even with that of Faroe Islands qualifying for Euro 2008.
