“Trudator” Mourinho: Already Fluent in Italian
By: Sam | June 3rd, 2008
Do recall that Jose’ made his entry into big football as Sir Bobby Robson’s trudator at Sporting Lisbon, then FC Porto and moved on with him to Barça.
“I started to learn Italian then [around March 11, when Moratti first called Mourinho after the 2nd leg loss to Liverpool], but it is easy - I only have problems with the temporal verbs, but the words come easy.”
Facile, one might say.
This facility, of course, he uses to charm the media: to English-speakers his Portuguese accent masks a razor intellect and impish sense of fun.
An Iberian accent can be interpreted amoung English-speakers as un-educated due to the over-precision in the choice of words — which is common to many people functioning even highly in their second, or third or fourth language. Mourinho uses underestimation to advantage because he thinks ahead of time about every word he says, yet he still comes across like he is improvising.
The lads at Setanta have it nailed: “E-mails … keep doing it on me!”
Jose Mourinho is the best actor and the most intelligent manager in the world of sport.

I think it was extra fancy that he answered some of the reporters today in Milanese dialect. In my experience, nothing charms Italians the way that learning the local dialect does. It also makes him “one of them”
