Cruyff not going back to Ajax afterall.

By: Rob | March 7th, 2008

It was reported a little while ago that the legendary Johan Cruyff was going to go back to Ajax in some kind of grand over-seer role, and again guide Ajax to greatness. However apparently now its not going to be as easy as that

Johan for Ajax vs another number 14

Personally I think its a big shame if Johan doesn’t go back. Obviously he is a very idiosyncratic man (he once turned down a coaching job at Roma because they have a running track around the pitch which is “the worst thing that there is”) and anyone who’s ever read the brilliant (you should go and read it if you haven’t) Ajax, Barca, Cruyff book will know that it really hurt him when Ajax and him parted ways last time, back in the late 80s, but if there is anyone who could turn Ajax around, it is the genius that is Johan Cruyff.

And lets be honest, Ajax needs turning around. Since their first emergence - led by Cruyff - in the 1970s they have produced some of the best footballers you’ve ever seen, for the record these include

Cruyff
Neeskens
Rep
Van Basten
Rijkaard
Bergkamp
Krol
The de Boer twins
Overmars
Seedorf
Van der Saar
Stam
Kluivurt
Keizer
Litmanen
Ibrohimovic
Reiziger

and so on and so on.

They also have a wonderful tradition of attacking football (Total Football started at Ajax) and beautiful kits. Yet they haven’t been challenging for quite a while now and they are truely a side that I would want to see back battling for Champions Leagues. Maybe someday Johan will bring them back. A man can dream.

One can dream. Cruyff always said he really enjoyed his time in the NASL and the U.S. Maybe he could be convinced to coach an MLS team.
