Fergie prepares for huge Arsenal match

By: Rob | May 5th, 2009

The two rivals going tete-a-teteIt might just have been me, but I detected an unusual nervousness in Sir Alex Ferguson’s words in the build up to tonight return match with Arsenal. The manager, who usually plays down the big matches, actually made the game seem much bigger, and pondered his chances of becoming the first manager to lift consecutive Champions League trophies (it was done in the old European Cup days, but not since the rebranding)

“There’s no question that this is the biggest game…The challenges and the clashes we’ve had with Arsenal in the past do not reach the proportion of tomorrow night, that goes without saying… it’s strange no European winners have held on to the trophy. It’s interesting and it is a challenge. We’ve got a lead and we’re only one kick away from Rome, so it’s a big incentive for us”

United of course lead 1-0 after the first leg, so are in a prime position, especially if they grab a goal at the Emirates. Arsenal have to win by two clear goals.

Usually looking at the two line ups, I would say that Man United would take it, you just don’t see them not scoring. But lest we forget this is the Champions League, and its pretty rare that a team costs through the semi-finals without any drama at all.

So I’m crossing my fingers for fireworks, Arsenal and Man United have shared some pretty epic semi-finals in the past, and here’s hoping this one will be one for the ages.

That one-goal advantage could be tricky for United, who must come out for several goals at the Emirates Stadium today.

Like you, Rob, I’m hoping for a scintillating — rather than phelgmatic — match!
