CL Team of the Season 2009 – Centre Halves
By: Rob | May 12th, 2009
So yesterday we launched our quest to find the best team of the 2008/9 Champions League season. We started with Goalkeepers (which you can still vote for, if you haven’t already, here) and now we move onto the selection of defenders.
Never the most glamourous of positions, defenders are of course vital to a succesful charge in Europe. Would Man United be in the final if it wasn’t Ferdinand and Vidic? Wouldn’t Barca’s beautiful football be wasted without a back line to back them up?
The rules, as yesterday are simple. You all vote for the players you’d like to see in this team. If you pick Other, you have to let me know in the comments who the Other is. I won’t vote unless its a tie, in which case I’ll have the deciding vote, assuming I can’t jig the formation to accomadate.
Top two players make the team, and the runner up gets to sit on the bench.
Who has been the best Centre-Half in this years CL?(blog polls)

I was torn between Pique and Marquez, I didn’t want to have three Barca centre-halves in there.

puyol has been not good in center this year… so he was an easy omission from a center half position to wingback

I guess you didn’t actually watch any of the games that Inter played.
Cesar, who carried the team against ManU twice doesn’t make the goal keeper list, which frankly, is no surprise, considering.
Materazzi who hasn’t actually played two games in a row for us all year – and I think played in two (2!) group stage games makes the center “half” or back list.
This is pretty funny.

I should point out that the inclusion of Matrix was an in-joke no-one was supposed to get.
