The Offside CL Team of the Year 2009 – Keepers

By: Rob | May 11th, 2009

Will Iker be your pick?Yep, after the wild success of last years user-voted team of the year, where literally tens of people voted, we’re bringing this beast back, so you can vote for the best XI players of this season – in the Champions League.

The Rules are simple. Every day, I’ll run a poll on who has been the best player in each position. The best one will get voted in (or best two in some positions) and the runner(s) up will be on the bench. The formation will be dictated by the votes. Last year we went with 451 because the midfielders were tied on votes, and because Torres was so far ahead in the striker catagory.

You can vote for someone not listed, but if you click “Other” you have to state in the comments who you went for. If that player wins then they’ll get in the team. Easy eh?

I’m not going to vote, unless its a draw, and can’t be seperated by changing the formation. In which case I’ll have a deciding vote just to make things easier.

So we’ll kick off with Goalkeepers, who is going to be your pick? Are Reina and Cech tainted too much by that fateful 4-4? Was Casillas too let down by his back line to make it in? Will Van der Saar avenge last years narrow defeat? As ever, you decide.

Casillas by far, if not for him, Real would have been mangled beyond recognition, sometimes the guy looks inhuman, he deserves better.

I’ve grown accustomed to seeing the look of ‘deer in the headlights’ on Casillas’ face. He’s with the wrong team in my opinion. He’s left too exposed at Madrid.

On Paper though, the Real defence is good – Cana, Pepe, Ramos etc. But they never look that great.

Casillas, no doubt. Many of the other keepers have made horrible gaffes while protected by a top-class backline. He has not, whereas his defense has been shambolic all year.

I almost felt bad for Casillas when Madrid played Juve. Del Piero hung him out to dry…

What a load of BS!!!!!!! How can keepers like Cech, Reina, Almunia, and Valdes be on there after all the high profile errors they have made in this tournament!!! Buffon is a worthy candidate but he himself was not at his best either, the only real candidates should be Van der Sar, Casillas, and Julio Cesar who wasn’t even on there and I know why. You guys just hate inter because we fucking despise that tournament cuz while everyone else seems to get lucky and gets “magic” out of that tournament we get absolutely nothing from it, FUCK THAT SHIT!!!

Or, Inter aren’t yet good enough to win the CL.

Rob, say what you want about Inter but it’s a crime that Julio Cesar isn’t in the poll.

Did you not see the Inter v Man U tie? 5 min into the tie he pulls off one of the best saves in the tournament, against arguably the best player of the tournament.

Save your breath – or least carpal tunnel – folks. Cesar could be the best Goal Keeper in the world right now, but no one who follows the epl, like this joker, is going to give any credit to a guy playing in Italy.

Buffon, I can guarantee, is only up here grudgingly and on admittedly fantastic World Cup rep.

Actually MAD, I love Italian football, and grew up watching it. And you know, I was trying to get a feel for the whole tournament, not just the odd good performance. But you know. Whatever.
